The day we have all been waiting for has finally arrived. We get to meet the children that we are desperate to work with.Like usual, this morning we had a delicious breakfast of egg, toast and porridge before we hit the road to the catch up education school.
Even though the weather was damp the atmosphere in the bus was electric, plans of the day were being swapped as we were greeted by smiling and waving children. We were amazed at how desperate the students were to get into their seats and start their day of learning, although it had been raining the entire morning they were still beaming with excitement as they took their places. We were informed that some of these children had taken up to two hours to reach the school.
We started with teaching them much needed literacy, numeracy and then we carried out some fun activities such as singing, dancing, and sports. We had 4 teams; gorillas, lions, leopards and elephants which all at different academic levels, and even though the children's English was not amazing they understood most things we said because of our gestures and facial expressions.
The whole day was fantastic and during the break they showed us some of their wonderful musical talents.
so, our first day has been exciting, incredible, unique and bit overwhelming at times. We are totally looking forward to the rest of the week and can't wait to be back with the children tomorrow – in our teams, teaching and doing more fun activities.
Love from all the team to all of you, and a happy birthday to Jake from Katie S.
